My research interests focus on the health and management of Australian marsupials, specifically kangaroos, wallabies, koalas and possums.
My recent work has concentrated predominantly on testing humane contraceptive agents for controlling overabundant marsupial populations, as part of the Koala and Kangaroo Contraception Program (KKCP). This research is conducted in collaboration with the following institutions:
• Use of Gonadotrophin releasing hormone (GnRH) agonist contraceptives to control overabundant marsupial populations. Studies include the longevity of contraception in a range of marsupial species, mechanisms of action at the endocrine level in a model marsupial species, attempts to extend contraceptive duration and ensuring safety during pregnancy and lactation.
Development of remote delivery technology for administration of contraceptive implants to animals in the field.
• Investigations of a Bordetella bronchiseptica outbreak in captive tammar wallabies. This study has documented the clinical symptoms and treatment regime for B. bronchiseptica infection in captive wallabies. The seroprevalence and response to vaccination are also under investigation.
