About ANZCoL

The Australian and New Zealand Conservation Laboratories (ANZCoL) represent an international collaboration between University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia and Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand. The main aims of ANZCoL are to offer graduate training and promote research into world conservation issues by studying the unique organisms and environments of the two countries. Research strengths encompass a comprehensive range of contemporary biology, from molecular biology and genetics, to ecology, marine biology, and natural history. These are all studied in the context of wildlife management and conservation practice in Australia and New Zealand.

Master of Conservation Biology with study in Australia & New Zealand

A unique Masters program offered jointly by Victoria University of Wellington (VUW), New Zealand, and University of New South Wales (UNSW), Sydney, Australia is now available. The Master of Conservation Biology (MConBio) consists of two five months' blocks, one taken at each university. The MConBio is a coursework program designed both for international and local students who wish to gain an understanding of the problems faced and the techniques used by New Zealand and Australian conservation scientists and managers. The terrestrial and marine environments encompassed by the two countries also enable comprehensive study of the main international issues in conservation. It provides high level professional training in biological theory and technology with considerable "hands-on" experience in both the field and laboratory.

The program at Victoria begins with a three-week field course, New Zealand Conservation Practice in which key conservation sites around the country are visited to observe management practices and become familiar with the unique plants and animals of New Zealand. On return to Wellington, students conduct critical analyses of key management issues, and take two courses: Conservation Ecology and an approved elective.

At UNSW, students undertake three compulsory courses: Australasian Mammals and Conservation, which explores all of the major contemporary issues of conservation in the region, World Conservation Biology and Conservation Project. The individually chosen project allows the students to undertake a major research project on a conservation-related topic during the course of one semester.

PhD Programs

ANZCoL offer joint supervision of PhD projects which complement the existing research programs of the Victoria and UNSW research groups. Particular emphasis is placed upon research topics which span both the New Zealand and Australian environments and draw on the expertise and facilities available at the two universities.
